As we were preparing for a day of feasting and thanksgiving here in the U.S., the directors of Autoimmunity Research, Inc. received news that a family has offered (anonymously) to donate $5,000 IF we can raise another matching $5,000 in donations by Christmas. This kind of support is exactly what we need in order to do everything we’ve planned for 2008.

One big commitment of our non-profit’s energy and money in 2008 will be our sponsorship of a session on the role of vitamin D in disease at the 6th International Conference on Autoimmunity in Porto, Portugal. We expect this conference will cost at least $20,000, including travel expenses. Medical conferences such as this are where we must be to let medical professionals know about the pathogenesis of chronic inflammatory diseases.

In addition to this conference, there are the numerous medical conferences and meetings we send Dr. Marshall and others to each year. These allow us to fulfill our mission to educate the public about disease.  The rest of our finances go into ensuring ongoing operations such as running the websites and purchasing and maintaining equipment and supplies.

Dr. Marshall will be busy researching and preparing his scientific papers for presentation at the upcoming conferences, so let’s all join together in one big effort to ensure the necessary financial support is in place to make 2008 our best year ever.

Please, if your life has been enriched, or if you have been impressed by the work of this organization, will you make a donation to Autoimmunity Research, Inc. before December 25? Keep in mind that we are a registered 501(c) 3, not-for-profit organization and all our work is still accomplished by volunteers. Will you take five minutes to make a tax-deductible donation today, either online using PayPal or by mailing a check? You may donate using your Visa, Mastercard, or checking account through PayPal. You do not need a PayPal account to pay by credit cards. Simply enter PayPal's website, with the foundation already identified as your gift recipient by clicking here and then click the "Donate" button and follow credit card sequence.

You can make checks payable to “Autoimmunity Research, Inc.” Send mail to:
Autoimmunity Research, Inc.
3423 Hill Canyon Ave
Thousand Oaks , CA   91360  USA

Have you let your family and friends know what Autoimmunity Research’s moderator-assisted websites and database of information have meant to you? They may want to support this organization, too, so please let them know how they can make a donation.

Thank you all for your support of Autoimmunity Research, in terms of finances as well as energy and good will. And thanks to our anonymous donors who’ve offered us this challenge. May we continue to grow and fulfill our mission in 2008.

Happy Thanksgiving to all,

Belinda, on behalf of the Directors of Autoimmunity Research, Inc.

Hi Belinda,

What a generous offer!

How can we help get the word out in case this announcement is missed here or at mp.com? Can we (yes I'm offering to help) email all the registered members of mp.com? Russ noted if each of the nearly 300 Phase 2/3 members that has posted a progress report at mp.com since mid-August donated $50 we'd have nearly $15,000!

'til later,
Jillian

Jillian,
A mail drop to members has been made very difficult by the measures many ISPs have implemented to reduce SPAM. If we sent a mail drop of 6000 identical emails from our servers we would now be labeled (and banned) as spammers. Some ISPs already have banned us as spammers, due to the email notifications that some members have asked to receive when new responses are posted to popular topics. We had trouble with AOL for ever so long, and then I spoke with the right people and everything has worked well since then.

The spammers can get their mail through by running a multiplicity of servers, we don't have that option. Nor are we big enough to be processed for the "white lists" of each ISP, like, for example, EBAY is.

The very best thing is for individual members to contact their circle of friends, and make sure they know  about the exciting things that are going on now.

After reading Trevor's suggestion just above, this is the email I composed and plan to send later today to people who I am in contact with, who may follow the board some, but not so closely that they always catch on to all the news.

I am posting it, in case it is helpful to others.  If you want, you can use it or adapt it for your use.

<<I'm sending this email to those of you I know who are using the MP but who may not be watching the MP fundraising links and site very closely, in order to bring to your attention an exciting new opportunity for reaching an international community of doctors and researchers at a conference on autoimmune disease next fall in Portugal.  The ARF is going to be sponsoring a session on Vitamin D that Dr. Marshall will chair.  Dr. Marshall and Dr. Blaney will be giving presentations in that session.

Along with the opportunity, comes extra costs and so there is a fundraising effort that has been speeded by a grant of $5000 which will be awarded by an anonymous donor IF $5000 can be raised in donations from the MP community before Christmas.

So, I would encourage you, if you can afford to, to donate as generously before Christmas as you can so the $5000 goal can be reached.  And if you know others who might be interested, you might send them an email too, or forward this one.

Dr. Marshall says that he can't really send an email to everyone on their list since there are concerns about the MP emails being regarded as spam by some Internet Service Providers.  So, he suggested that individuals contact people they know to help get the word out.

I know we are going to reach our goal of generating over $5,000 in donations to Autoimmunity Research, Inc. by Dec. 25 to get that matching grant.

We have over 5,000 members, but even if only 500 of them donate $10 each, that would be $5,000. And that's before members contact their friends and relatives! :D  I know many will be willing to provide more than $10 of support.

Some members are already making regular donations through PayPal or by check. This is what it will take to help our organization reach the next level of service: where we will ultimately provide more education to practicing physicians, teaching them how innate immunity works, how vitamin D plays a role in immunity and how chronic diseases can be overcome using drugs already in the formulary.

A donation to Autoimmunity Research could be the gift you give yourself this holiday season. Giving to a worthy cause enhances both the donor and the cause, and that donation will make you feel even better if you have received good help from our websites!

Please donate as soon as you have a chance. The future of our service depends on people like you.
Belinda

What is the current donation level for ARF's "warchest" to allow Trevor to attend the conference?  I have not seen any communication on this important total.:)

Thanks,

Phil

Thanks for asking. You are right, Phil.. it's time for an update.

End-of-year contributions came in strong! Thanks to everyone, we met and exceeded our goal. :)

Total cash contribution from Nov. 20 (when we began the campaign) through Dec. 31 was $22,783.00 In addition, our benefactor who offered the $5,000 challenge granted us a donation worth an additional $5,000. All that totals $27,783.00 through the end of 2007.

People are continuing to contribute in 2008, but I don't have a total for 2008 yet.

Our organization will be sponsoring attendees at several medical conferences in 2008, in addition to sponsoring the 6th International Conference on Autoimmunity in Porto, Portugal in the fall. We think getting presentations and attendees to medical conferences is critical to educating medical professionals, so this is a major part of our work this year. Unfortunately, the cost of airfare and hotels has been going up and some of these conferences are in Europe, where US dollars suffer as currency.

Thanks to everyone who is a part of this work. We can't do it without you. This looks to be our best year ever. Let's keep it up.

Belinda
